Portland City School Board passes budget!

The Portland City School Board passed their budget!

Check out details below!

Major initiatives in the budget include:

● Doubling enrollment in the district’s pre-kindergarten
program.

Adding Spanish instruction to the fifth grade curriculum.
● Increasing the district’s investment in technology
infrastructure and computers for high school students, elementary school
teachers and staff, at an annual cost of $526,000 over the next four
years.

The budget would eliminate eight positions in the current budget and
add eight additional positions, resulting in no net change in staffing.
The budget and updated budget information may be found at
http://www2.portlandschools.org/school-budget.

The school budget now is before the City Council, which is expected to
vote on it on May 7. All Portland polling places will be open from 7
a.m. to 8 p.m. for the May 15 referendum. Those who would like to cast
absentee ballots may apply for one now by visiting the city clerk’s
office at Portland City Hall or by filling out an online application:
http://www.portlandmaine.gov/voter/schoolbudgetapplication.pdf .

Ballots may not be returned until after the City Council approves the
budget (i.e. May 7). The deadline for applying for an absentee ballot
or voting with an absentee ballot in person at the clerk’s office is
May 10. A sample ballot may be seen at
